The year is 2376, six months since the Dominion War ended, and the Alpha Quadrant is finally starting to stabilize itself from the war. Starfleet has once again turned their focus to the exploration of the Galaxy and scientific discoveries, but with recent reports of Borg sightings in the Beta Quadrant the Federation fears another great conflict may arise.
Located between the Typhon Expanse and the edge of the Romulan Neutral Zone, Deep Space Four was the first to notify Starfleet Command in 2373 about the invading Borg vessel that nearly destroyed the Federation, by use of time travel to prevent First Contact. Because of the suddenly strategic importance of the station's location on the edge of the Beta and Delta Quadrants, the Federation began upgrading the station shortly after the attack. If the Borg do attempt to invade Federation space again they may target the station this time, and the upgrades to the defensive and offensive systems will ensure that can again send advanced warning.
With the upgrades nearly complete, the station has continued it’s regular routine of watching for not only Borg activity, but Romulan activity as well. Starfleet has also taken advantage of DS4's position to study the Typhon Expanse, an area of space known for it’s temporal properties, and largely unexplored.
For those looking to study the vast area of space, keep an eye on the Romulans, or ensure the protection of Earth from the Borg...this is where the journey begins...
